Francisco Solano Lopez was born in 1826; he was the final ruler of the Lopez dynasty. He was a brigadier general by the age of eighteen. He was known for being an insatiable womanizer who frequently abused women. After his father’s death in 1862, Francisco reigned over Paraguay. He silenced his critics though imprisonment and death. He is responsible for causing a war with Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay. This war killed over half of the population of Paraguay. Many historians believe that Francisco was a patriot who resisted the Argentine and Brazilian designs on Paraguay. He is remembered for holding off the enemy for five war-filled years and since the 1930s the general public has viewed him as a hero (“Paraguay-History").
